22 May A Proverbs A Day // Proverbs 22
The 22nd // Proverbs 22
A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”–Proverbs 22:1
How is it already the 22nd? We are 22 days into the challenge! I can honestly say it has FLOWN by! With only 9 days left in the month, I’m so excited to realize that I have stuck to this challenge even in the midst of a very busy season in my life!
Of all the “challenges” I’ve done, this one has been the most poignant by far! It has convicted me, humbled me and has made me feel more calm in the midst of anxiety than any challenge ever could. I feel closer to God and I reflect for a moment on each day’s lesson before making decisions. It’s been life-changing for sure and I’m planning on continuing to read His word daily [no, I won’t write about it every day].
Chapter 22 is different than anything we’ve read this far. Solomon starts the chapter by reminding us of the bigger picture. He reminds us that God is the creator of all–rich and poor [22:2] and that at the end of the day, your reputation and your legacy will FAR outlast your monetary gains [22:1]. He also reminds us that our legacy is not just left with our names, but with the lives led by our children. He reminds us that we should make sure to raise our children up in the way they should go [22:6] so that they may lead lives the glorify God too!
Then, Solomon goes on to share [over the next few chapters] 30 Sayings of the Wise! I love these because I feel like these 30 sayings perfectly summarize the past 22 chapters and the main points, several of which Solomon has repeated multiple times. Over the next few days, I’m going to summarize these sayings into what I’ve taken away as clear, concise rules to live by.
Saying 1 // Proverbs 22:17-21
Seek wisdom at all costs! Don’t know where to find it? Read these 30 sayings, or the entire book of Proverbs. Solomon says “I’ve written this for you, so you’d be wise to use it!”
Saying 2 // Proverbs 22:22-23
Care for the poor and needy! Do not use someone else’s struggle for your own personal gain!
Saying 3 // Proverbs 22:24-25
Separate yourself from angry people. Be surrounding yourself with those people, you are putting yourself at risk of becoming one, yourself!
Saying 4 // Proverbs 22:26-27
Don’t buy something you can’t afford.
Saying 5 // Proverbs 22:28
Don’t steal. Do not take what isn’t yours.
Saying 6 // Proverbs 22:29
Work hard to become the best in your field.
Today, I pray that, at the end of this challenge, I can keep these sayings in my heart and use them when I need them. I pray that I remember that my legacy on Earth will not be left with a dollar sign next to it. Instead, my legacy will be how I lived my life and will be found in the life that my precious little B lives. I pray that I remember this incredible responsibility I have daily and that I take this honor I’ve been given and make it count.
