The 23rd-24th // Proverbs 23-24

Chapters 23 and 24 are a continuation of the 30 wise sayings that Solomon began in Proverbs 22. Since they are both full of little sayings that I am simply summarizing my take-away’s from, I figured I’d combine these two chapters together. Here we go:

Saying 7 // Proverbs 23:1-3

Have good manners, especially when you sit down to eat with others!

Saying 8 // Proverbs 23:4-5

Don’t make it your whole life’s goal to get rich… In the end, money and riches will disappear.

Saying 9 // Proverbs 23:6-8

Don’t surround yourself with stingy people. Don’t waste your time going out for a meal with them… They’re all talk, but they will leave you hanging… I hear “I don’t want no scrub…” with this one! Hahaha!

Saying 10 // Proverbs 23:9

Don’t waste your breath giving fools good advice… they’ll only make fun of you. This is actually great advice and something I feel like the youth of today need to hear especially in regards to social media.

Saying 11 // Proverbs 23:10-11

Do not take advantage of the poor and the orphans.

Saying 12 // Proverbs 23:12

Continuously seek wisdom and apply it to your life. You’re never done learning.

Saying 13 // Proverbs 23:13-14

Discipline your children. A spanking won’t hurt them. Sin will.

Saying 14 // Proverbs 23:15-16

When you pursue what is right, you make your father proud. [both your heavenly father and your earthly parents!]

Saying 15 // Proverbs 23:17-18

Do not envy those who are reaping the Earthly benefits of sin. God has your future covered. Focus on following Him and He will bless you tenfold.

Saying 16 // Proverbs 23:19-21

Do not overindulge in food or alcohol. Don’t drink until you’re drunk or eat until you’re fat.

Saying 17 // Proverbs 23:22-25

Honor your parents in your actions and in your words. Take care of them in their old age.

Saying 18 // Proverbs 23:26-28

Do not hire prostitutes or cheat on your spouse.

Saying 19 // Proverbs 23:29-35

In times of sorrow, exhaustion or hardship, don’t turn to alcohol.

Saying 20 // Proverbs 24:1-2

Do not envy those who are reaping the Earthly benefits of sin. God has your future covered. Focus on following Him and He will bless you tenfold.–There’s a reason Solomon repeated this one… Maybe it’s important?!

Saying 21 // Proverbs 24:3-4

The greatest thing you can fill your home with is the love of God. It’s better than anything else!

Saying 22 // Proverbs 24:5-6

In order to make it through this life, you need guidance. Turn to God and His wisdom to guide you through it all.

Saying 23 // Proverbs 24:7

Wise conversation will go over a fool’s head. They won’t understand what you’re saying. (I think in this case, it’s another “don’t put too much effort into people who refuse to understand the depths of your faith. They’ll mock you instead of listen.”)

Saying 24 // Proverbs 24:8-10

Don’t be a schemer. Any plan you make should be for good and never to harm another.

Saying 25 // Proverbs 24:10-12

Don’t just strive to live your life in pursuit of the LORD, push others towards His will. Actively participate in His kingdom.

Saying 26 // Proverbs 24:13-14

Honey is sweet, isn’t it? Know that God’s love and the wisdom that comes from knowing Him is just as sweet as honey!

Saying 27 // Proverbs 24:15-16

Don’t try and make a good person stumble. They will always get back up.

Saying 28 // Proverbs 24:17-18

Don’t laugh when your enemy falls. God is just and it’s wrong to do.

Saying 29 // Proverbs 24:19-20

Once again… Don’t look at someone who is exceeding by the world’s standards, but is sinful, and wish that you could be like them. Their ways walk them down a dead-end road.

Saying 30 // Proverbs 24:21-22

Love God with all your heart. Place your faith in Him. Don’t place your faith in other things because at any minute your life could change–maybe even for the worse–and then what will you have? God will always be there.

Solomon goes on to share even more wise sayings about honesty, justice, kindness, discernment and life.

Life Application:

Today, I pray that these sayings of the wise stick with me throughout my life. I pray that, when faced with decisions, I can remember these words of wisdom and walk in His ways with discernment and love!
