08 Jul Our Trip to Montage Laguna Beach
June was a very special month for me. The month of May was INSANE, y’all. IN. SANE. Between the end of the school year, prom, graduation, Mother’s Day, my birthday, my mom’s birthday, a wedding in Orlando, a family reunion in Charlotte, NC, and cleaning out my classroom and packing it up to say goodbye for now to teaching [not to mention running the blog and running my household], I was ALL. OVER. THE. PLACE. Emotional, exhausted and exhilarated all at once! June was a God-given month of recovery. I’ve hardly posted to the blog at all these past 5 weeks, my Instagram has been much more sparce and my life has slowed down significantly. I started my new job [YAY!] 3 weeks ago right after arriving home from an amazing family getaway to Montage Laguna Beach in beautiful California!
Needless to say, that trip was MUCH needed. It was exactly the thing to help me relax and recover before my new job began. It was such a godsend to spend 5 days in beautiful Laguna Beach… 5 days in the beauty of God’s creation… 5 days away from the Texas heat and humidity… 5 days spent with my family… 5 GLORIOUS days!
It was amazing. Here’s my recap:
We flew into John Wayne airport in Orange County on Wednesday, June 15th. B-Man and I flew out a day before F so he could work. We met my family at the airport, picked up the rental car and headed towards the beach. After a quick stop at Whole Foods for some milk and snacks, we arrived to Montage Laguna Beach, the gorgeous, 5-Star Hotel that would be our home for the next 5 days.
Montage is in the heart of Laguna Beach. It’s a private resort that is set right at the public walkway to the beach, so it is one of the most unique places I’ve ever been. While you feel like you’re away from the crowds, like you’ve really gotten away, you still feel like you’re in California. You get to watch the hustle and bustle of people headed to the beach… you feel like you’re a part of something exciting, fun, beautiful… something that only California can make you feel a part of.
Let me just tell you, this hotel is unlike any other experience. The service, the beauty, the pool, the beds, the family-friendly atmosphere [and the honeymoon-friendly atmosphere], the amenities, the spa, the food, the views… I could go on! When you walk into the lobby, you’re greeted with the mot incredible view! Montage is built into the mountain and you enter the hotel on the top floor, looking out at the gorgeous mosaic pool, the beautiful resort grounds and, of course, the beautiful beach! The fireplaces were blazing, the sea breeze was blowing and the bar was open… OH. MY. GOSH. I could’ve just lived in the lobby…
The rooms we stayed in were separate from the hotel, off to the side, facing the ocean and right at the walkway to the beach. To create a sense of privacy, the resort gave us a backyard, almost. It felt like we were nestled away from the hustle and bustle, but a part of it all the same. It was the perfect space for my boy to run around outside and for me to enjoy a glass of wine in a lounge chair at sunset. The best part?
There were BUNNIES! Real life bunnies [and lizards] everywhere! One of the bunnies would come over and let us pet him, pick him up and feed him! As a mommy, this was a highlight of our trip. I loved watching my boy explore, learn and play in God’s nature! It was unbelievable!
When we arrived at Montage Laguna Beach, we were starving so we headed straight to the Mosaic Restaurant and ate outside. I had a great Kale Salad and discovered the “Skinny Watermelon Margarita”… that was the demise of my healthy living on that trip! At any given moment, I was sipping on one.
The Mosaic Pool at Montage Laguna Beach is gorgeous. They have a great baby pool off to the side where we spent our days laying out and playing with B in the water! They have an incredible kids club, which we saw outside playing and swimming and doing cool activities [B was too young, though]. One thing i noticed was that every single person working at the resort seemed genuinely happy to be there and to serve the guests. They addressed us by name and were there to get us anything and everything we could ever want, whether poolside or in our rooms!
I was able to get a couple of workouts in while on the trip! All I had to do was walk outside of my room, get on the walking path and I was ready for a run overlooking the most beautiful scenery! And let me tell you, a run in California in the summer is WAY easier than a run in Texas in the summer! Holy cow!
We left the resort one time. ONCE. [Well… the boys played golf a couple times, once at Los Angeles Country Club and once at Bel Air Country Club, to celebrate Father’s Day] We took the advice of a friend of mine and ate at a restaurant called Las Brisas. I honestly was expecting to NOT like it because Mexican food in Texas is very different than California, but I have to say I had one of the best margaritas I’ve ever had, the guacamole was unbelievable and the seafood made me feel like i was back in Cabo! It felt healthier than typical Tex-Mex and I couldn’t stop eating it all!
I felt so relaxed and comfortable at Montage Laguna Beach! I never put a full face of makeup on [besides to go to dinner at Las Brisas]. I took long baths at night. I drank watermelon margaritas and all the yummy wine! We played games outside in our “backyard” and celebrated Father’s Day inside the room. We had room service delivered, we ordered Pizza from a local restaurant [because we didn’t want to leave the resort!] and we roasted marshmallows by the fire pit as a family! We shared moments and made memories I’ll never forget!
Thanks, Montage Laguna Beach for providing us with a family-focused vacation like no other! When can we go back?
