16 Jun Throw a Party // MET Gala-Themed PROM
There are some things in life you sign up for having no clue what you got yourself into. Three years ago, I signed up to be a class sponsor for the class of 2016 at my high school and, while I knew there would be work involved, I had no idea HOW much work it would require. You see, the class sponsor leads the elected class officers year after year in their fundraising endeavors, mostly raising funds necessary to throw their senior prom, then helps them in the planning process during their junior and senior years… yeah.
Now don’t get me wrong… I loved this class, like REALLY loved this senior class… like an unnatural amount of tears were shed with pride and love as they crossed the stage at graduation… so putting the work and effort into planning their end-of-the-year-festivities was my distinct honor. I have never felt more accomplished [except after receiving my own diploma in college or after delivering my son] than I have in the past few weeks reliving the event! I have to say that it was, quite possibly, the best prom I’ve ever been to… seriously. It was a HUGE success.
I can’t take any credit for it. I had help from two AMAZING coworkers, my senior officers were unbelievable [securing the venue on the DAY I delivered B-Man] and their parents were consistent support whenever and however they were needed. With the increasing pressures of teaching and the fact that I also signed up to plan a 3-Day Carnival for the seniors, we decided to hire Molly Rasmussen of Pop Parties to be our event coordinator for the prom [and eventually the carnival too] and it was THE BEST THING WE EVER DID!
Molly is amazing, y’all! She took our theme ‘A Night at the MET Gala’ and made it a reality for the best price possible! From a custom dance floor to florals on the tables to custom-built decorations to a red carpet to an AMAZING DJ to a custom snapchat geofilter, Molly handled it all!
The prom was held on the 42nd Floor of the Cityplace tower in Dallas. This venue has incredible 360 views of the city skyline [that is what inspired the theme to recreate the MET Gala in NYC], which provides for a gorgeous space!! The venue was beautiful, easy to get to and had a great selection of food and drink, however, I would not recommend booking a wedding or event here. In the year that I worked with them, they had change-over so many times that the 3 different people who were in charge of our contract [our representative changed every few months] all promised us different things and never really communicated the entirety of our agreements with each other. It all worked out in the end and the last girl we had in charge scrambled to make it all happen [it wasn’t her fault], but I can only imagine how hard that experience would’ve been as a BRIDE. Molly with Pop Parties was the perfect person to have on the case, as she handled the back and forth with the venue and all the vendors for us and was an amazing advocate! Her team came, set up and ran the entire event, which took a HUGE load off of us!
Because the MET Gala honors those who create beautiful art through costume and clothing design in Hollywood and world-wide, we decided to pick a few designers to highlight through our decor. Each table/space had a different theme from Alexander McQueen to Kate Spade to Christian Louboutin! The decor was beautiful! We had hanging signs with the names of the designers on them as well as a custom event GOBO with the logo for the evening. That same logo went on a beautiful snapchat geofilter along with the Dallas skyline! The up-lighting changed as the evening went on and created an amazing atmosphere for the kids!
Nowadays, prom isn’t just for dancing, and this event will be, for many of the students at our school, the only black tie event they’ll attend in their lives. In order to make it a night they’d never forget, we had some great activities, like a casino setup, butt-sketchers [yes, they sketch your butt!], photo booths and more! No matter what their interests were, there was always something to do! We wanted to make sure that no one was bored at any given moment!
Students entered the prom by walking a red carpet, complete with paparazzi and red-carpet-correspondents [some journalism-minded juniors] who were there to interview the celebrities as they arrived. The red-carpet coverage was broadcasted live on periscope!
The best part of the night, by far, was the dancefloor. Our DJ was unbelievable! The kids danced all night long and the custom black, white and mirrored dancefloor was so full of dancing teens, you could feel the floor moving! The best part of the entire event, for me, was watching my students dance and enjoy every single bit of the music and the fun! All of our hard work had paid off and the kids were LOVING it! It was a GREAT feeling! [Not gonna lie… I cried a little!]
The whole point of the event was to make our kids feel like they were celebrities, and I think it was achieved. They seemed to really enjoy it all! Planning a prom of your own? This event theme was so much fun! The students really loved it and it was FAR more unique than the standard “Masquerade” or “Enchanted Garden” proms you see everywhere. I think the students REALLY got the celebrity experience, don’t you? I even hopped in on the fun!
Here’s a list of some of our creative partners that made this event one to remember:
