40 Weeks Pregnant – Pregnancy Week by Week

40 Weeks Pregnant – Pregnancy Week by Week

You’ve made it. Happy Due Date!

ANY. DAY. NOW. Literally. ANY DAY. You have made it to your due date, mama! FORTY CRAZY WEEKS!!

Remember when your baby was the size of a mustard seed or a blueberry? That was two seasons ago and feels like a lifetime, right? Your little blueberry is now the size of a Watermelon… you’re 40 weeks pregnant now, so you’ll be popping that watermelon OUT any day now. Although, you could go another week… some go two weeks, even… before you see your baby. Your body – and your doctor or midwife – knows best!

40 Weeks Pregnant from the Doctor:

Stripping or sweeping the amniotic membranes is a safe procedure that can be done to improve the likelihood of spontaneous onset of labor now that you are at your due date. Stripping membranes increases the likelihood of spontaneous labor within 48 hours and can reduce the need for induction of labor with other methods. Women who undergo membrane stripping may experience discomfort from the procedure as well as vaginal bleeding and irregular uterine contractions within the ensuing 24 hours. Ask your doctor if you are a good candidate for membrane sweeping.

Other “natural” methods of bringing about labor onset, may not be helpful and could be harmful to your baby. Any herbal supplements or other the counter medications, need to be reviewed with your provider to ensure their safety in pregnancy before use.

40 Weeks Pregnant from the Pregnant Lady:

Well, last week I mentioned that I was headed to the doctor to get checked once more before the weekend… I never made it to that spin class I scheduled for after my appointment because it turns out I was in labor!

I had my precious baby girl at exactly 39 weeks! I’m SO happy she’s here!

You can read about her birth here.
You can meet our sweet girl here.

Life is crazy right now, but one thing is for sure… these babies are WAY BETTER on the outside than on the inside! If you’re still pregnant, each day waiting for baby can be excruciating! Take heart and know that your big day is coming! You will kiss your precious baby’s cheeks so, very soon!

What are you feeling?

And a little bit scared…

Labor is kind of scary. How will I know it’s happening? There are so many “what if’s” associated with labor and delivery, too… Don’t let your mind go there. Remember that your body was made to do this. Did you know that a body that is in a coma will still birth a baby? Once it starts, there’s no stopping it, so relax and get excited! Your day is here!

Pregnancy Milestone – Going into Labor – How will I know?

Not everyone gets the benefit of having their water break before labor begins. For most women, the contractions will begin like a cramping, much like the Braxton Hicks contractions they’ve been experiencing. Real labor will feel like someone is turning up the volume little by little. Remember, those contractions will be like period cramps at first. Then, they will grow longer, stronger and closer together! If you’ve had them consistently for a couple of hours, it’s probably the real deal! Try and relax once they begin, even though they hurt! You’ll be holding your baby in no time!

Pregnancy Buzz Word – Natural ways to Induce Labor

As you get bigger and bigger and more desperate to get that baby out, people will give you all kinds of advice on how to get labor going. Some are pretty crazy and none of them are proven to work. Talk to your doctor before trying anything! Some of the things I’ve read are pretty intense and kind of crazy… Here are some of the things I feel comfortable trying:

walk, walk, walk
eat spicy foods
have sex
yes, it works for many
drink red raspberry leaf tea
nipple stimulation
I try this and last about 15 seconds because it’s so weird to me! haha
membrane stripping
this is something I had done with Baby B to avoid being induced, but it didn’t work. I was thinking I’d have it done at 40 weeks with Baby A, but she made her appearance a week early!

How to Survive this week:

How to survive? This is hard when the anticipation is killing you, right? Try and rest. Put those feet up. Finish that baby prep to-do list. Walk walk walk. Go on a date with your husband. Baby is coming!!!
