Beholding and Becoming by Ruth Chou Simons – Julia’s Book Club

First, how did I find this book? I read somewhere on Instagram that Jennie Allen wrote an endorsement for Ruth Chou Simons and wanted to look into it. I found that Ruth’s first book GraceLaced won a 2018 Christian Book Award and that she is not only a Christian author, but also an artist and entrepreneur (and mother of six!). Beholding and Becoming was just released last month (September 2019) and I chose it because of its unique incorporation of art. Also, I noticed that 99% of her 198 amazon reviews of the book are 5-stars, so let’s see what it’s all about!

Beholding and Becoming is an inspiring quilt of work that can be read daily like a devotional or all in one sitting. I’m usually eager to read and finish a book but I decided to space this one out over several days. It is a book that can be used like a daily devotional, read all at once, or read with a group. It is separated into easy chunks and includes beautiful, inspiring art.

One of my favorite lines from the book: “The hallmark of a mature Christian is that he or she knows how to speak when it’s costly, to remain silent when there’s freedom to speak, and to discern what is best for the glory of God.” (pg. 141)

Throughout the book, Ruth is honest with us about herself and about what loving God means. She’s relatable for many as a mother, author, artist, and Chinese woman. Similar to Allen’s message in Nothing to Prove, Ruth Chou Simons reminds us “The pressure’s off… “We simply need to put our love for Jesus on display in the ordinary places of our daily lives.”

I highly recommend this book for daily study, or an addition to a feminine coffee table as it both pleasing to the eye and easy to pick up for 5 minutes (while still getting a dose of Jesus!). I bought a couple extra copies to give to friends as birthday gifts. It would also make a great (yet large) stocking stuffer this Christmas. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did!
