Finding Light Within Darkness – 3 Ways to Look for the Light

Without darkness, light simply could not exist. We cannot have one without the other, and thus creates the balance of life we must learn to juggle. Learning to seek the light in even the darkest places can completely change our perspectives, and fuel us with the faith needed to reassure us that we can endure anything, and we mean anything.

However, this much easier said than done. Sometimes the darkness we find ourselves in can be clinical, and getting out requires more than just a change of thought process. But, by making a few simple steps, we can make the choices necessary to allow our lives to be just a little bit brighter. Below, we discuss a few key things to achieve both peace and light, even in the darkest of times.

Starting with Yourself 

All journeys towards happiness and acceptance begin with you. If you aren’t in a place where you’re proud of who you are, this is definitely where things must start.

Often, especially in times of trouble and anguish, we blame ourselves. We wonder what we did wrong, what we could’ve done differently, and why we aren’t strong enough. Not only is this harmful to our psyche, but this puts immense pressure on us to mend it all. But beating ourselves up is not the answer.

Understanding your self-worth is key. Just because something bad has happened, or maybe you’ve made a mistake, this doesn’t denote you as a “bad” person. Rather, this gives us something to work towards and learn from. No matter who we are, where we’ve been, or what we know, we can still grow and become someone we are proud of. However, this means that we must accept our past as our past, and move from it. Consider these learning experiences as little bits of light in the darkness: they are signs of growth.

Consider Your Environment

When you’re surrounded by others shrouded in darkness, it can be even more difficult to pull yourself out and see the light. Unfortunately, getting better oftentimes means cutting ties with toxic relationships and letting go of those who do not make you feel like your best self.

This can be tough, especially when these people are those you care about and love. But, in the end, you are what’s most important. If you place yourself around constant darkness and negativity, combatting it is almost impossible. It’s crucial to work towards being in an environment that is supportive and safe, whether that be with loving members of your family or just you and your pup — whatever makes you feel like your best self.

If you are consistently giving and giving without receiving anything in return, it’s easy for us to become emotionally bankrupt,  which can leave some feeling empty and without purpose. Take the time to recharge and do things that directly benefit you, not anyone else. Self-care is key, even if it means simply taking a few hours or the entire day off of work.

Finding What Keeps You Going

 Having faith, motivation, or a muse can be more than enough to get us out of the overwhelming darkness and back into the light where we belong. When we have something that keeps us going, that drives us to get out of bed in the morning, every day feels a little less difficult.

Being surrounded by darkness is a battle most of us have to face, but none of us have to continue battling. We don’t have to let it win. When we find inner strength, surround ourselves with a healthy and supportive environment, keep our faith, there’s truly nothing that can get in our way.
