06 May Looking Back on My Twenties – The Most Transformative Decade
This week, I turn thirty. That’s a big life milestone. I’ve been on this earth for THREE decades now. That’s a lot of life, formative life, that has happened. When I consider the next 10 years and my goals for that time, I can’t fully do so without looking back on the last decade and all the life that has happened and, most especially, the blessings God has bestowed upon me during that time! I wanted to make a list of all that I’ve experienced in the past 10 years and all that I dream of experiencing in the next 10. So, here it is…
When I was 20…
I spent half the summer working at Kanakuk and the other half in London with Baylor in Great Britain.
I surrounded myself with friends [and a boyfriend] who were not positive influences in my life.
I went through the heartache of learning who my true friends were – this was HARD.
I solidified friendships with an incredible group of women who [I didn’t know at the time] would become my lifelong friends.
I adopted my dog, Pudge.
I was diagnosed with Hoshimotos Thyroiditis, Hypothyroidism and Celiac’s Disease.
I was hospitalized with a infection that almost took my life.
I ended the relationship and decided to reprioritize my life and focus on building a career in television news.
When I was 21…
I went on a blind date and met the love of my life.
I traveled to Argentina, where I studied Spanish and made lifelong friends.
I discovered how incredible my body felt when I fed it organic foods.
I moved to New York City and worked for CBS This Morning [it was CBS The Early Show at the time].
I decided to move back to Texas to finish my degrees and to pursue a serious relationship with that guy.
When I was 22…
I stopped eating dairy and refined sugars.
I graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and one in Spanish.
I moved to Dallas.
I started my first job [as a recruiter].
I got engaged.
When I was 23…
I bought and renovated a house.
We adopted our dog, Keira.
I had the most amazing bachelorette weekend in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
I got married.
We honeymooned in Napa Valley, California.
When I was 24…
I decided to quit my job and pursue a career in education.
We traveled to Italy with my family.
I got a job teaching Spanish at a local high school.
I learned that a healthy marriage requires a significant amount of humility.
I began my fitness journey by joining a local CrossFit gym.
When I was 25…
I went paleo.
I learned that family > everything.
I started my favorite year of teaching, ever by when I accidentally became the Spanish 3 PreAP teacher.
I decided to take on the roll of Class Sponsor for the Class of 2016.
My sister, Claire got engaged and then married.
I spent 6 months in a long-distance marriage when F had to work in Ohio.
We had several deaths in the family.
Our marriage grew in unimaginable ways and I really stepped into myself that year.
When I was 26…
I found out I was pregnant.
I prepared my home for a new baby.
I decided to start a blog.
I welcomed a beautiful, baby boy!
I launched The H is For… A Lifestyle and Wellness Blog
I learned that I am capable of much, much more than I ever thought I was.
When I was 27…
I counted my macros for two months.
I planned a prom and graduation celebration with the most incredible group of seniors.
I learned that running a blog requires A LOT of work.
I loaded my plate with WAY too much.
I watched my baby turn into a toddler.
I taught an extra class.
When I was 28…
I did a 31 day Proverbs Challenge
I threw an incredible prom and graduation celebration for my seniors.
I took my boy to DisneyWorld.
I started a job as a Global Account Manager for an IT Sourcing company – working from home.
My sister, Carly, got engaged.
I attended Camp Well Summit and it changed everything for me.
I finally decided to step into His calling in my life.
When I was 29…
I learned a lot about friendships – the type of friend I want to be and the type of friend I want to have.
I went to Hawaii with my family.
I found out I was pregnant.
My sister, Carly, got married.
That 31 Day Proverbs Challenge? — I published it into a devotional.
I learned, again, that family > everything.
I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.
My dreams for my thirties…
I want to continue to grow, learn, stretch and mature.
I want to dive into my role as a mother and wife, wholeheartedly and commit to pursuing them without distractions.
I want to do the next right step over and over again, following my calling in Christ.
I want to adopt a baby [really two, but I’ll start small].
I want to pursue deep, Christ-centered relationships with other women.
I want to continue considering my health and wellness as a priority.
I want to wake up for my children, not to my children.
I want to travel as a family and as a couple more this decade.
I want to step out of my comfort zone over and over and over again.
I want to wake up every single morning and remember just how badly I need Jesus.
