21 Jan The 40-Day Sugar Fast by Wendy Speake – Julia’s Book Club
What makes you happy? For me, I would usually give a list of quite a few things including knowing I am loved by God, knowing my family is healthy, enjoying the moments of life that are filled with joy, etc. And… I would definitely include cookies on that list. I love cookies – J Rae’s sugar cookies the most. Or the sandwich cookies from local Fort Worth bakery – Hurley House. So how did a sweet tooth like me pick this book? I want to replace my addiction to sugar with a sweet dependency on Him. I want to experience 40 days without sugar successfully (I tried for lent once in college and I failed). I picked this book because it doesn’t really tell you to give up sugar for health reasons, instead it encourages you the reader to spend 40 days growing closer to God and devouring his sweetness.
The book is set up like a 40 day devotional, but I read it in a week (for the purposes of this review). I will reread starting in January so that I can read the chapters day-by-day. (I also have the audio book to listen to day-by-day.)
Wendy’s writing style feels like she is a friend or spiritual mentor having a conversation with you; she tells you stories, leads you to scripture, and provides prayers in each chapter/day. “We change what we hunger for” according to Wendy, and this book made me hungry for more of God’s sweetness and grace. God is eternally extraordinary while sugar (or other temptations in life) are temporarily satisfying. You will love Wendy’s ability to help you look internally and to tell stories about her life and loved ones.
I hope you all enjoy this book and find a loved one to do the sugar fast with! I am currently doing it with my sweet coworker Melissa who also ordered the book. Let me know if you have any questions or comments below!
